When you speak, use words that cannot be replaced by any other.
Choose words so precise and powerful that no other word can convey the same meaning.
- Thirukkural 645
This is one of my favourite Kurals, and I don’t miss quoting it during my training sessions. Great communicators choose their words with care. When a message is crafted with the right words, it becomes almost impossible to misunderstand and unnecessary to modify.
In my early days of writing, I was always satisfied with my first draft. I hesitated to make changes because every word felt “right” simply because I had written it. The more I tried to edit, the more attached I became to the original version.
But reading 'On Writing Well' by William Zinsser changed that. I learned the value of rewriting, of refining my thoughts, polishing my sentences, and actively searching for the one 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 word.
Thiruvalluvar reminds us of the same truth. To find that exact word, we must rethink, rewrite, and refine until the message becomes clear, strong, and unambiguous.
Next time you write or speak, remember, words shape understanding, and the right irreplaceable words have the power to move minds. They can be your greatest tool in communication.
