Thirukkural Week 7

ree

Have you ever fixed a tricky bug and then struggled to explain how you fixed it?

Early in my software career, I thought solving the problem was the goal. If the code worked, the job was done. But over time, I realized there are two ways knowledge fails to spread:

  1. Sometimes, we simply don’t know how to explain it clearly. Even our best solutions remain tangled in our own minds.

  2. Other times, knowledge is intentionally hidden and kept close out of fear, insecurity, or the mistaken belief that it gives control.

In both cases, the solution stays in one head. The logic never gets explained. And learning stops there.

Thiruvalluvar doesn’t soften his words when he addresses this:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐈 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 - 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 6

இண்ருழ்த்தும் நாறா மலரனையர் கற்றதுஉணர விரித்துரையா தார்.

Those who cannot explain what they have learnt are like flowers that bloom without fragrance.

-Thirukkural 650

Harsh? Yes.

True? Also yes.

Whether in software, teaching, or leadership, knowing is just the start.

Knowledge gains its real value only when others can understand it.

When a 2000-year-old Kural still fits today’s tech world so well, maybe this harsh wisdom is exactly what we deserve :)
