Day 4: Make a simple crochet headband with a bow for beginners

Updated: Apr 10

You made something useful yesterday. Today, you will make something you can wear. This is where crochet becomes personal. A soft headband with a simple bow. Made entirely with single crochet, just like what you already know.

What You Will Make

A comfortable crochet headband using brown yarn, with a small white bow and a neat brown center wrap.

Techniques You will Learn

  • Maintaining consistent width while working rows

  • Measuring for a wearable item

  • Joining ends neatly

  • Making a simple bow from a small crochet piece

  • Assembling pieces

What You Will Need

  • Brown yarn (for headband and bow center)

  • White yarn (for bow)

  • Crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Step 1: Measure Your Headband Size

You can measure around your head where the band will sit.

For an average size:

  • Length: 48 to 52 cm (19 to 20.5 inches)

  • Width: 5 to 6 cm (2 to 2.5 inches)

Do not worry about exact numbers. Crochet stretches slightly.

Step 2: Foundation Chain (Lengthwise)

  • Chain 60 to 70 stitches (for average adult size). I made 50, since it is for an eight-year-old.

  • This equals about 48–52 cm

💡 Tip for learners:

Do not pull chains too tight. Keep them relaxed so the band doesn’t shrink.

Step 3: Build the Width

  • Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and across

  • You will have about 59–69 stitches. One stitch less than the chains added. I had 49 stitches.

  • Continue for:

    • 6 to 8 rows. I made 6 rows.

This creates the width of the headband.

Step 4: Finish and Join

  • Once the length fits well, fasten off

  • Leave a long tail

Bring both ends together:

  • Stitch them neatly using your yarn needle, or make a single crochet joining the two ends.

  • Turn the work.

Your headband base is ready.

Weave the ends.

Step 5: Make the Bow (White Yarn)

Keep this simple and fun.

  • Chain 10 to 12 stitches

  • Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain and across

  • You will have about 9 to 11 stitches

  • Work 6 to 8 rows

  • This creates a small rectangular patch.

Fasten off and weave the ends.

Step 6: Shape the Bow

  • Take the white rectangle

  • Fold it gently like an accordion or pinch it in the center

This creates the bow shape.

Step 7: Make the Center Wrap (Brown Yarn)

  • Chain 4 to 5 stitches

  • Work 2 to 3 rows of single crochet

You’ll get a small strip.

Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Step 8: Assemble the Bow

  • Place the small brown strip over the center of the white bow

  • Wrap it around tightly

Use your yarn needle to:

  • Stitch at the back to secure it

Now your bow is ready.

Step 9: Attach the Bow to the Headband

  • Place the bow over the seam of your headband

  • Stitch it in place securely

This also helps hide the joining seam.

You can stick a stone or a bead in the centre.

What You’ve Learned Today

✔ How to crochet for a wearable size

✔ How to maintain consistent width

✔ How to join ends neatly

✔ How to create and assemble small crochet pieces

A Small Note from Me

If your headband feels slightly loose or tight, that’s okay.

Every piece you make teaches you more about sizing and tension.

And now, you have made something you can wear.

That’s a beautiful step forward.

Tomorrow, you’ll learn double crochet and make your very first winter hat ✨
